Loving the race skins, had them all off in under five minutes. Putting the fat boy RaceTech springs in the forks, reinstalled the Öhlins shock which I just had serviced and re-sprung, and just need to have the slicks swapped with the new Dunlop Q3s and then I’m finally ready for the track.

Well, Ol’ Yeller is officially retired. Just added a new bike to the stable, a 2005 Suzuki GSX-R750. This thing is set up for the track, with more gadgets and gizmos that I know what to do with. It’s light, fast and is going to take a while to get used to but I can’t wait to get this thing out on the track and see what we can do together.

Wow, what a great day. Temps were HOT, but on the track everything was cool. I had a little hiccup after the first session as I noticed my back tire was going flat. Took the bike over to Jason at Dunlop Race Tire Services but unfortunately he didn’t have a tire to fit my aging 18 year old bike. While I was contemplating my options of calling it a day, or making the drive to Bakersfield to pick up a new tire and try to salvage the rest of the day, Jason came through and somehow found a replacement tire for Ol’ Yeller. It was even the same make and model tire that had gone flat. Thankfully, the rest of the day went smoothly and without any more drama and it was fun enjoying the track with good friends and family. Thank you Jason, you really saved the day!
Dave Moss had Ol’ Yeller dialed in and after a few sessions had me glued to the track. If you haven’t use his service at the track, I highly suggest spending the $40 full a full day of adjustments. Dave has incredible knowledge and won’t make you feel like an idiot when you ask him stupid questions. 🙂
I’m thinking I may have to retire Ol’ Yeller from future track days as I think maybe it’s time to bring out a more modern bike even though the Repsol is over 11 years old. 🙂

I can’t believe it’s been nearly eight months since my last track day. Can’t wait to get out there again and take some corners with some good friends. Ol’ Yeller is ready and willing and I’m looking forward to getting the old dog back on the track.

As the afternoon temperatures started to drop, we decided to call it a day. This was my third track day, and it was a pretty good day. Let’s Ride Track Days put on a great event, and since it was the last track day of the year, they followed up with a great BBQ. Not sure how many days I’ll get in next year, but I’m looking forward to visiting Buttonwillow Raceway Park as well as some of the other tracks that California has to offer.

Although the cold temperatures kept down the pace, the track configuration opened up a long back straight, utilizing all six gears and speeds of 150+ MPH which made for a very interesting day. It was a little difficult telling yourself to take it easy on a coarse you usually take much faster but the last thing I wanted to do was throw Ol’ Yeller to the ground.

As we headed to the rider’s meeting, fog rolled in pretty think. Thankfully, after the meeting the fog started to lift and we waited patiently in Randy’s tent until they opened up the track. Yes, Randy brought the HEAT!!!!!

Woke up early, and started our day. Randy got there soon with warm coffee. He enjoyed a nice warm evening at home the night before. 🙂 We quickly set up the additional tent and got the bikes ready to inspection.

We have arrived… We quickly got everything unloaded, and Alan got started on the BBQ. I’m not going to kid you, it was a cold night. I found that December isn’t the best month to be camping out at the track. While Alan got comfy in the lush front portion of the van, I did my best to stay warm in the back, after the generator ran out of juice at some time in the night.

Well, our patience paid off, the track dried up very nicely with only a few standing water puddles that were easily avoided. Most riders had already fled leaving a small number of riders who were ready to ride. At first they opened to track up to all riders and we took off on our first lap. Unfortunately, due to a few riders not playing by the rules, we were split up into grounds that alternated every 30 minutes. As it turns out, were were able to get in three sessions which actually equated to more than half a day of track time if we were able to meet our planned intervals.
Turned out to be a great day after all. The morning rain provided some time with friends that I haven’t seen in a while and enjoy some great food that people had been cooking up at the track. Although the track season is coming to an end, I look forward to the coming year, and many more track days to come.
